Khayelitsha:- Western Cape police and residents are in shock after the brazen murder of Sergeant Mohlomla Tusani (47), an off-duty member of the Nyanga Visible Policing Unit, who was shot dead while visiting family in Town Two on Sunday afternoon.
According to police reports, Sgt Tusani had just dropped his wife off at church and was waiting at his uncle’s home in Hlomela Street when two armed men entered the residence around 14:55 – 15:00 on 21 June 2026.
The suspects fired multiple shots at the sergeant before fleeing in a vehicle. Nothing was stolen from the house or the victim, leading investigators to treat the incident as a suspected targeted hit. Five cartridge cases and one projectile were recovered at the scene. A murder docket has been opened at Lingelethu SAPS, and the case has been handed over to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks). No arrests have been made yet.
Western Cape SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa confirmed that the officer was simply visiting a relative at the time. SAPS management has extended condolences to Tusani’s family, colleagues, and friends.
MEC Anroux Marais, Western Cape Police Oversight and Community Safety, described the killing as devastating and warned that if linked to his police duties, it must be seen as “an attack on the state.” She urged investigators to leave no stone unturned.
Community Policing Forum (CPF) members and the police union POPCRU have expressed outrage. POPCRU highlighted the daily dangers faced by officers and called for stronger protection for law enforcement. Local voices are demanding swift arrests and better resources for township policing.
Sgt Tusani, attached to the Browns Farm satellite under Nyanga SAPS, leaves behind a grieving family and colleagues who remember him as a dedicated servant of the community.
