As SAPS Warns Schools About Learner Safety

CCN Reporter – George April

CAPE TOWN:-  Residents in Delft have raised concerns about alleged early-morning robberies targeting commuters, pedestrians, runners and schoolchildren along Symphony Road, while Delft SAPS has separately urged schools to take additional precautions to protect learners amid ongoing taxi violence.
According to a community alert circulated on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, a suspect is allegedly targeting people between approximately 05:00 and 07:00 along Symphony Road, between Eland Street and Gillo Street, in the direction of Ksour Street.
The community report alleges that several people were robbed during the early hours of Wednesday morning, including a woman, older men and a schoolgirl reportedly coming from the Symphony bond houses area.
Another older man, said to have come from the direction of Hindle High School, was allegedly kicked, assaulted and thrown to the ground near Eland Street.
The allegations have raised concerns about the safety of people who have to leave home early to get to work, exercise or attend school.
Community members have appealed for an urgent increase in police or law-enforcement visibility in the area, particularly along Ksour Street near the large white church known locally as the Big Mega White Church.
The identity of the alleged perpetrator has not been independently confirmed, and the allegations in the community alert should not be regarded as established facts.

DELFT SAPS ISSUES SCHOOL SAFETY WARNING

In a separate safety notice, Delft SAPS’s Social Crime Prevention Desk has appealed to school principals and management teams to ensure that learners arriving late are not left waiting outside school gates.
The warning comes against the backdrop of ongoing taxi violence, which police say requires schools, security personnel and management teams to pay particular attention to learner safety.
Constable Manyebese, from Delft SAPS’s Social Crime Prevention Desk, urged schools, especially those situated near taxi ranks and other high-risk areas, to ensure that late-arriving learners are attended to and admitted safely onto school premises as soon as possible, in accordance with school procedures.
The notice cautioned that leaving learners standing outside school gates or along streets could expose them to potential danger.
Schools were encouraged to work closely with their security personnel to ensure that learners are received and supervised safely.

COMMUNITY SAFETY REMAINS A PRIORITY

The reported robberies and the police warning highlight the safety concerns facing residents who travel on foot during the early morning hours.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to remain alert to their children’s travel arrangements, while residents are urged to report suspected criminal activity to the police rather than confronting suspected offenders themselves.
The community’s call for increased visible policing in the affected area also underscores the importance of cooperation between residents, schools and law-enforcement agencies.
Cape Coast News (CCN Online) will update this report should further verified information become available from Delft SAPS regarding the reported incidents and any police response.
