At Weston Senior Secondary School
VREDENBURG – A wave of fear has spread among learners at Weston Senior Secondary School following two violent incidents where students were robbed of their mobile phones.
According to reliable sources, these attacks were acts of revenge linked to a fatal stabbing incident that took place at the Langebaan Rugby Club on Saturday.
Sources claim that the victim of Saturday’s insident did not die from the stabbing itself, but due to delayed emergency response. The connection between this tragic event and the school attacks, has raised serious concerns about safety on and around the school grounds.
Targeted Attacks
Both incidents occurred yesterday and involved young men from outside the school premises. The attackers were reportedly searching for specific learners, but when they could not find them, they turned to others, robbing them instead.
One of the victims, a 19-year-old learner from Laingville, was allegedly threatened with a knife held to his throat before his phone was taken.
Recurring Problem
This is not the first time such incidents have occurred. Learners from Hopefield, who board at the school hostel during the week, have previously reported similar attacks.
A concerned student, who wishes to remain anonymous, expressed his fears: “They robbed two phones today, but what would have happened if a learner had refused to hand over his phone?” “And believe me, they survive today, they will come back”, he added.
Impact on Learners
One of the victims who was robbed, was in the middle of writing exams when he was forced to give up his phone. These incidents have left students feeling unsafe and struggling to concentrate during an already stressful exam period.
Councillor Called In
Tyron Williams from St Helena Bay was called to assist the 19-year-old learner after he was threatened. While Williams voiced his shock and concern, no police case was opened, as the learner reportedly could not identify his attackers.
Serious Security Concerns
Parents and community members are deeply troubled by the lack of security at the school, particularly at the hostel. The entrance is reportedly unmonitored, allowing gang members to enter freely.
Given that these attacks took place near school buses and on hostel grounds, there is an urgent need for stronger security measures.
Authorities Under Pressure to Act
CCN plans to reach out to the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) and the local SAPS to ask what steps are being taken to curb this ongoing crime wave. With exams underway, such events have a severe emotional and academic impact on learners.
A Call for Solutions
The repeated incidents at Weston Senior Secondary highlight the need for collaboration between authorities, school management, and the broader community to ensure a safe learning environment. Parents and learners are calling for immediate action before another violent incident shakes this already distressed school communities.
