Chaos at Cemetery

Reporter – George April

Cape Town: –  A solemn funeral service at Maitland Cemetery descended into chaos this week, when multiple gunshots were fired during the procession.

This incident prompting a swift police response, and the arrest of three foreign nationals. The incident occurred on Wednesday, 15 May, when officers from the South African Police Service, (SAPS) were alerted to gunfire at the cemetery. On arrival, they found approximately 50 people gathered at a grave-site, where some individuals were allegedly performing a gun salute.

According to police spokesperson FC van Wyk, officers searched all vehicles and individuals present.  Three suspects, aged 32, 36, and 50, were arrested and face charges related to the possession of unlicensed and prohibited firearms and ammunition.

“Police seized a 7.65mm pistol with five rounds, a 9mm CZ without a serial number, and a 9mm Norinco with one round,” Van Wyk confirmed. “Additionally, four more firearms were recovered abandoned near the grave, including a .38 Special Taurus, a Glock 17, a Norinco 7.65, a CZ 7.65, and an extended magazine containing 23 rounds.”

All the firearms will undergo ballistic testing to determine whether they are linked to other crimes. The suspects are expected to appear in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court today, 16 May.

Management at Maitland Cemetery praised SAPS for their swift and professional response, which helped de-escalate the situation and restore calm.“Cemeteries are sacred spaces, meant for mourning, reflection, and respect,” said a spokesperson from the cemetery. “We urge all visitors to exercise caution and refrain from any form of unlawful behavior on these grounds.”

The public is reminded that firearms should never be discharged or displayed unless strictly necessary, and in accordance with firearm regulations. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity at cemeteries to their nearest police station.

Let’s work together to ensure our places of remembrance remain peaceful and safe for all.
