Mthatha, Eastern Cape:- Communities across Eastern Cape have been devastated by relentless storms, with flash floods sweeping away homes, cars, and even a minibus carrying young learners.
So far, search and rescue teams have recovered dozens of bodies from the Cicira River and surrounding areas. Three bodies, two children among them, were found just outside Decoligny, pushing the death toll close to 50.
Among the tragedy, a 22-seater school transport minibus was overwhelmed by raging floodwaters on the R61, carrying 13 learners, two additional passengers, and the driver. Three of the children survived by clinging desperately to trees. Families now grieve, while the community tragically watches the waters reclaim another life each day.
Local schools remain closed, and roads like the R61 are still blocked. Power outages and damaged infrastructure have left many stranded.
Volunteers, emergency teams, the SANDF, and police continue combing the region for survivors and victims alike.
Let’s share this story to raise awareness, support relief efforts, and honour the lives lost.
