– Another Cape Flats Family Torn Apart While Promises Remain Empty

KALKSTEENFONTEIN:- The relentless wave of violence tearing through Cape Flats communities has claimed yet another life.

On Sunday morning, 46-year-old Naeema van der Vindt was shot and killed inside her boyfriend’s wendy house in Gesiggie Street, Kalksteenfontein.

According to her boyfriend, 50-year-old Christopher Engelbrecht, Naeema woke up around 8am, saying she was heading home to assist with her child’s birthday preparations. He claims he went back to sleep, only to be woken by gunshots about 45 minutes later. Engelbrecht said he found Naeema bleeding, unaware at first of the gunshot wound to her face. He ran outside but allegedly saw no one, describing the street as quiet at that hour.

Naeema’s family, however, is not convinced. Speaking anonymously out of fear, her children revealed that Naeema was a key witness in an attempted murder case and was due to testify in court this Wednesday. She had reportedly received chilling threats warning that she should “sleep” before sentencing,  a sinister reference understood by many on the Flats.

Bishop Lavis police, responding to the scene around 09:18am, confirmed Naeema was found dead inside the informal structure with a fatal gunshot wound to her face. No arrests have been made, and the motive remains unknown.

The murder has once again ignited anger and heartbreak among residents who feel abandoned by leaders who only appear during election season with empty promises.

“We report on murder after murder on the Cape Flats – it’s become so normal that people barely flinch anymore,” one frustrated community member told CCN.  “But it’s not normal. Families are being destroyed, witnesses are silenced, and the rest of us are left to wonder if justice even exists here.”

Police have urged anyone with information to come forward by contacting Crime Stop on 08600 10111 or using the MySAPS app, with the assurance that information can be shared anonymously.

As yet another family buries a loved one, the community is left asking the same haunting question: How many more must die before action replaces empty promises?
