Cape Town:- The wheels of justice have turned in a heartbreaking case that shocked the Steenberg community and beyond.
On Tuesday, 22 July 2025, Charles Williams (51) was sentenced to a total of 23 years behind bars after being found guilty of kidnapping, murder, and defeating the ends of justice in the Khayelitsha Priority Court.
The case stems from a brutal incident that unfolded on the evening of 10 July 2024, when 57-year-old Charlene Overmeyer was kidnapped at gunpoint from her home in St Montaque Village, Lavender Hill, while watching television with her family. The attackers used the cover of a sudden power outage to strike, storming the house with flashlights and dragging the terrified woman outside. Their faces were covered, and they fled the scene in a silver vehicle.
The Provincial Organised Crime Investigation: Anti-Kidnapping Task Team took charge of the case. After an intense 40-day search, the victim’s body was tragically discovered in a shallow grave in Xakabantu, Vrygrond, Muizenberg, confirming the worst fears of her grieving loved ones.
Three suspects were eventually arrested and charged:
🔹 Farried Williams (23)
🔹 Charles Williams (51)
🔹 Jason Arendse (31)
However, in court this week, the charges against Farried Williams and Jason Arendse were withdrawn. Only Charles Williams stood trial and was convicted on all counts.
He received the following sentences:
🔸 15 years for murder
🔸 5 years for kidnapping
🔸 3 years for defeating the ends of justice
These will run consecutively, bringing his total sentence to 23 years imprisonment.
This case stands as a grim reminder of the violence still plaguing many communities but also of the tireless work done by specialist police units to bring justice to victims and their families.
