Cape Flats: – Valhalla High School in Elsies River has confirmed a safety incident this Thursday morning, during which five learners were robbed of their cell phones.
In an official notice to parents and guardians, the school urged the community to ignore unverified social media reports, and reassured families that correct procedures are being followed. The parents of the affected learners were contacted immediately, and the children were fetched from school.
SAPS has opened a case and is involved in the investigation.
Principal Dr. A.V. Bleazard said the school remains open and stressed that learner safety remains the top priority:
“Please be assured that the school remains open as usual, and the safety and well-being of our learners and staff continue to be our top priority.”
Exams and Meetings Continue as Planned
The school further reminded parents and learners that end-of-term exams are approaching. Grade 12 learners will be writing History tomorrow, while Grade 11 learners will continue with their Tourism PAT. BOT classes are scheduled to continue on Saturday.
The compulsory parent meeting has been postponed to Tuesday, 26 August 2025 at 16:30. However, this meeting is not for all parents, only those specifically notified by class teachers are required to attend.
Community Concerns
The incident has sparked concern among parents and community members, who feel that children are increasingly vulnerable to crime:
“Our children cannot even feel safe at school anymore. This is unacceptable,” said one parent. Another commented: “The school and SAPS must act fast to make sure this does not happen again.”
Despite the setback, the school reiterated its commitment to safeguarding learners and ensuring that education continues without disruption.
