Guns Off the Streets

Reporter – George April

Cape Town:-  Police units in the Western Cape have removed several firearms from circulation in two separate incidents this week.

On Thursday, 11 September 2025, officers from the Anti-Gang Unit and Delft Crime Prevention Unit acted on information following a shooting in Abedere Street, Delft. Their investigation led them to an address in Nyanga Street, N2 Gateway, where they discovered a firearm and ammunition. Six suspects aged between 19 and 29 were arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. One of the suspects is also being questioned in connection with the murder linked to the incident.
Once charged, the suspects will appear in the Bellville Magistrates’ Court.

In a separate operation the following day, Friday, 12 September 2025, members of the Anti-Economic Crime Task Team and Provincial Counterfeit and Illicit Goods Policing Team were patrolling NY108, Gugulethu, when they noticed a suspicious man near the cemetery. Upon searching him, officers found a 9mm pistol without a serial number. A further search of three other men resulted in the recovery of another 9mm pistol and a shotgun. None of the suspects could provide valid licenses or permits.
The suspects, aged 24, 43 and 45, were arrested for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. They are expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 15 September 2025.

Police have reaffirmed their commitment to clamping down on violent crime and removing illegal weapons from communities.
