Bellville:- Swift and decisive action by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) National Intervention Unit (NIU) led to the arrest of three suspects following a kidnapping and armed robbery incident in Bellville.
The incident happened on Thursday, 09 October 2025.
According to a preliminary report, a 23-year-old man was walking along a street when he was suddenly confronted by four suspects. The men allegedly forced the victim into their vehicle before speeding off.
However, their escape was short-lived. Members of the NIU, currently deployed in the Western Cape as part of Operation Lockdown III – spotted the vehicle and immediately gave chase. The suspects abandoned the car and attempted to flee on foot, but three were swiftly arrested. One suspect managed to evade capture.
Police recovered the victim’s stolen belongings and an imitation firearm believed to have been used during the crime.
Operation Lockdown III is part of a national strategy to clamp down on drug trafficking, extortion, and violent crimes linked to gangsterism, particularly across the Cape Flats.
Community members in Bellville and surrounding areas have since praised the NIU for their quick response.
“It’s good to see police acting fast for once — these crimes happen so often, and people live in fear,” said a local resident who witnessed the chase.
Another resident commented, “We need more of these interventions in our neighbourhoods. The presence of NIU gives us hope that law and order can return.”
Police have confirmed that the search continues for the fourth suspect, who remains at large.
