Community Leaders Demand Answers After New Arrests

CCN Online

CAPE TOWN:- After yet another round of firearms seizures in the Cape Flats, frustrated community leaders are asking a question that has become all too familiar: Where are all these illegal guns coming from?

This follows two separate incidents on Friday morning, 24 October 2025. Members of the Grassy Park police, while conducting crime prevention patrols in Ottery,  noticed a man acting suspiciously as they approached.  The suspect attempted to flee,  but was quickly apprehended.  Officers discovered a 9mm pistol with 28 rounds of ammunition in his possession.

In an unrelated case, the Mitchell’s Plain Sub-District Crime Combat Team searched a house in Choir Street, Steenberg, where they found another 9mm pistol with 10 rounds hidden inside a bag in the bedroom. An adult male was arrested.

Both suspects are expected to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Community leader Trevor Petersen, from Steenberg, expressed deep concern over the ongoing flood of illegal firearms into Cape Town’s communities.

“Every second gangster seems to have a weapon these days. It’s impossible to understand how so many guns end up on our streets while innocent people are dying,” Petersen said.  “We keep hearing about successful police operations, but the real question remains. We want to know, who is supplying these firearms, and why aren’t they being stopped at the source?”

Residents in areas like Grassy Park, Ottery, and Steenberg say the frequent gunfire and shootings have become a way of life, despite continued police patrols.  Many fear that unless the root of the problem, the flow of illegal weapons is uncovered and dismantled, communities will remain trapped in a cycle of violence.

Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing, but residents want stronger action and accountability.

“It’s not enough to catch the small guys on the street,” said Petersen. “We need to expose the entire chain – from corrupt suppliers to smugglers.  Until then, our children are the ones paying the price.”
