Cape Town:- A disturbing rise in violent and deceptive crimes has shaken communities across the city this month.
In Philippi, an e-hailing driver was hospitalised after a brutal robbery attack on Friday, 18 October 2025, around 12:30pm in Dyamala Street. According to police reports, the driver had arrived to pick up a client when he was ambushed by a group of young men.
In a desperate attempt to escape, the victim crashed into a nearby yard, sustaining injuries before being rushed to hospital. Local residents say these fake ride requests are becoming alarmingly common, happening “almost daily” in the area. Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile, in Tokai, residents are on high alert following the theft of two Toyota Fortuners over the weekend. Community safety groups warn that vehicle thefts are rapidly increasing in surrounding suburbs.
Authorities and neighbourhood watches urge motorists to:
- Always lock vehicles and hide valuables.
- Park only in secure, well-lit areas.
- Install GPS tracking or extra security systems.
Both incidents serve as a reminder that Cape Town residents need to remain vigilant and work closely with neighbourhood watches and police to combat this growing crime wave.
