Something is deeply wrong in some communities.
- When police respond to crime, people complain.
- When the police do nothing, people complain even louder.
- So what do we really want?
- Safety, or chaos?
- Protection, or power for criminals?
On 9 December 2025, Metro Police conducted a high-density operation in the Manenberg precinct, where officers found a 29-year-old man in possession of a firearm and ammunition at Alleta Court.
As officers were escorting him to their vehicle, he incited onlookers to attack. Moments later, gunfire erupted from the crowd towards officers. Police returned fire, injuring two suspects during the exchange.
Several individuals now face charges including:
- Attempted murder
- Public violence
- Illegal possession of a firearm
- Interfering with police duties
But here is the question communities must answer:
When a man with an illegal gun is arrested, and neighbours fight to protect him
- Who are they protecting?
- And who are they sacrificing?
Their own children walk these same streets.
Their own families suffer when crime wins.
They fear gangs, yet defend criminals.
They demand safety, yet attack the very people risking their lives to provide it.
How can we build a safer future if we fight against those trying to secure it?
- We cannot shout for justice in the morning, and throw stones at police in the afternoon.
- We cannot cry about crime today, and defend the criminal tomorrow.
- We cannot expect a better future for our children if we keep choosing the wrong side.
A message to communities:
- It is time to think.
- Time to decide what future we want.
Do we want streets ruled by fear?
Or streets where children can play without dodging bullets?
Safety is not possible without cooperation.
And no police operation can succeed if the community becomes the enemy.
Support the law – Protect the innocent – Stand for what is right – Because silence protects criminals, but courage builds a future.
