Charged with Murder and Torture

Cape Town:- The State is strongly opposing bail for 11 members of the Western Cape Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) arrested in connection with the death of Manenberg resident Wade Price during an interrogation.
Price died on December 4, 2025, after allegedly being beaten, restrained, choked, and smothered by the officers while questioning him and his friends about a double murder near the Athlone Magistrates’ Court. He was then taken to Manenberg Police Station and denied permission to leave.
The 11 officers face charges of murder, four counts of assault with intent to grievous bodily harm (GBH), four counts of kidnapping, and one count of torture – classified as a Schedule 6 offence requiring proof of exceptional circumstances for bail.
Three accused appeared in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court on Monday, with the remaining eight scheduled for bail hearings on December 18-19. A post-mortem confirmed Price’s death was due to unnatural causes.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) probed the case following Price’s collapse after complaining of ear pain.
NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila confirmed the State’s intent to oppose bail for all accused.
CCN Statement:
This case send a powerful statement – No one is above the law, not even the officers tasked with enforcing it.
The arrest and charging of 11 elite Anti-Gang Unit members for allegedly torturing and murdering Wade Price during an interrogation, is a stark reminder that the badge doesn’t grant immunity.
When those sworn to protect communities cross into brutality and abuse of power, the justice system must hold them fully accountable – just like anyone else.
It’s a tough but necessary signal to law enforcement across South Africa: Break the law, and you’ll face the consequences.
