Charges: Culpable Homicide, Reckless Driving, and Driving Without a License – The State v. Mr. Diego Stevens

Reporter – George April

Atlantis:- The tragic road accident in Saxonsea, Atlantis, that claimed the life of five-year-old Lemicah Gelant  continues to grip the local community as the case heads back to court. This marks the second court appearance for the 34-year-old suspect, Diego Stevens, who remains in custody. The hearing is expected to include placing his appointed attorney on record and potentially a formal bail application from the defense.

Both the State and the Atlantis community are firmly opposing any bail at this stage.  Residents have mobilized strongly, collecting over 1,600 signatures on a petition, calling for the suspect to remain detained throughout the trial.  The petition reflects widespread outrage and a demand for accountability following the devastating incident, where the young Grade R learner was struck, killed instantly, and reportedly flung approximately 20 metres from the point of impact.

Community members, including vocal advocates like Tammy-Lee Jafta and Roxy Cleophas, continue to rally under calls for “Justice for Lemicah Gelant” and “No Bail for That Reckless Driver.”  Social media hashtags such as #piempjouberk, #piemphulle, and #piempjoukind have amplified the family’s grief and the push for justice.

The prosecution is actively seeking additional eyewitnesses to come forward.  Their case could be strengthened by further testimony about the circumstances of the collision.  Authorities are still awaiting critical forensic results, including blood sample analysis  from the suspect (to determine if alcohol or other substances were involved) and the official post-mortem report on the child.

The Atlantis community is urged to attend the court proceedings today, February 24th 2026 to show support for the Le-meecha Galant Family, (the grieving family of little Lemicah) during this difficult time.  Your presence can help demonstrate the collective call for justice and ensure the voice of the affected residents is heard.

The suspect remains in custody pending the outcome of today’s hearing.

Further updates will follow as details emerge from the Atlantis courtroom.  The community stands united in seeking justice for this innocent life lost far too soon.
