“Over Alleged Taxi Industry Links”
CCN Reporting
WESTERN CAPE:- The Western Cape policing community has been rocked by reports that more than 20 South African Police Service (SAPS) members are facing investigations over alleged links to the taxi industry.
According to reports, the officers include members stationed at various police stations and specialised units across the province. Several officers have reportedly been suspended, while others have resigned as investigations continue.
The matter has attracted national attention due to SAPS regulations that prohibit police members from owning or operating taxi businesses without proper authorization. The restriction exists to prevent conflicts of interest, as police officers are often required to investigate crimes, disputes, violence and other matters involving the taxi industry.
Western Cape Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile has confirmed that investigations are underway.
Reports indicate that more than 20 officers are facing criminal and internal disciplinary processes.
The allegations have raised concerns about accountability, transparency and public confidence in law enforcement. Community leaders and oversight bodies have called for thorough investigations to ensure that any wrongdoing is properly addressed while protecting the rights of those involved.
At this stage, it is important to note that no findings of guilt have been made against the officers concerned. The investigations and disciplinary processes are ongoing, and all affected members remain entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven otherwise.
The developments come at a time when South Africans continue to call for greater integrity and public trust within law enforcement agencies. The outcome of the investigations is expected to be closely watched by communities, government officials and the policing sector across the country.
Authorities have indicated that further action may follow depending on the findings of the investigations.
