A South African woman has been sentenced to a staggering 130 years in prison by the High Court of Sierra Leone after being found guilty of multiple cocaine trafficking charges.
According to court proceedings, 37-year-old Asandra Denise was arrested at Freetown International Airport after authorities allegedly discovered 365 pellets of cocaine weighing approximately 5.4 kilograms in her possession. The court heard evidence from forensic experts who confirmed the substance was cocaine hydrochloride.
Despite pleading not guilty, Denise was convicted on five drug-related charges, including unlawful possession, dealing, collecting, importing, and transporting prohibited drugs. Justice Andrew S.C. Johnson imposed sentences ranging from 10 to 30 years on each count.
However, there is an important detail many people are missing: although the combined sentence totals 130 years, the court ordered that all sentences run concurrently. This means Denise is expected to serve 30 years in prison rather than 130 years consecutively.
The court also ordered that the seized cocaine be forfeited to the state and destroyed under official supervision. The case has attracted international attention and highlights the severe penalties many countries impose for drug trafficking offences.
