In Major Anti-Illegal Mining Operation at Losberg Kloof Mine
CCN Reporting
Westonaria: – Just days after the controversial 30 June 2026 unofficial deadline set by anti-immigration groups such as March and March for undocumented foreign nationals to leave South Africa, law enforcement has struck another significant blow against illegal mining.
On Tuesday, 7 July 2026, Gauteng Police, in partnership with the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) and Sibanye Protection Services, conducted “Operation Prosper” at Losberg Kloof Mine in Westonaria. The operation resulted in the arrest of more than 150 suspects on charges related to illegal mining and associated offences.
The joint operation targeted transnational crime syndicates operating in disused and active mine shafts in the area. Authorities described the crime scene as still active, with ongoing searches and processing of suspects underway.
This latest crackdown comes amid heightened national attention on illegal immigration and its links to crimes such as illegal mining. Although the government did not recognise the 30 June deadline issued by groups like March and March, the movement has continued to mobilise communities and call for stronger action against undocumented foreigners. Protests and awareness campaigns have persisted beyond the deadline, with organisers vowing sustained pressure on authorities to address what they describe as unsustainable levels of illegal immigration.
Illegal mining in areas like Westonaria has long been associated with undocumented foreign nationals, leading to safety hazards, environmental damage, and loss of revenue for legitimate mining operations. Operation Prosper forms part of a broader, ongoing effort by SAPS and the SANDF to reclaim these sites and combat organised crime.
“#FightingCrime remains a top priority,” police said. “Through #PartnershipPolicing and collaboration with entities like the SANDF and private security, we are intensifying our efforts against #IllicitMining.”
Further arrests and seizures are expected as the active phase of the operation continues. Police have urged the public to report any information related to illegal mining activities.
