More sentences like these can restore confidence in the justice system

Madadeni:- The justice system, currently viewed by many as a joke, sent a clear message on Tuesday, 29 September 2026, when the Madadeni Regional Court sentenced two friends—aged 38 and 41—to life imprisonment each for rape.
The incident took place on 9 July 2016 at Liester Farm in the Madadeni police precinct. The victim, then 23, was visiting her boyfriend at the farm. Following an argument, he assaulted her severely. She went to his brother for help, and the brother allowed her to stay in his room to calm down. He later returned with his friend, and the two took turns raping her. Afterward, they told her to go home and bathe. However, she first sought medical attention and then opened a case with the police.
The Madadeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit handled the investigation. Both suspects were arrested. They were released on bail, but one absconded and was only re-arrested in August 2026, after nearly nine years. The trial resumed; the two were convicted of rape and each sentenced to life imprisonment.
They were also declared unfit to possess firearms.
Sentences of this nature are exactly what is needed. More such sentences will restore public confidence in the justice system, a system currently often viewed as a joke, while people live in communities that are supposed to be protected by the government. When offenders truly feel the full weight of the law, it sends a powerful message that violence against women and girls will not be tolerated.
