As Anti-Gang Efforts Continue
CCN Reporter – George April
Cape Town:- The removal of firearms from the hands of criminals yielded further success on Monday, 5 October 2026, during crime prevention initiatives in Hanover Park.
Members of the Anti-Gang Unit conducted an intelligence-driven operation when they heard gunshots in the nearby vicinity. They followed the sound of the gunshots and saw a suspect running across an open field in Helman Walk. Officers chased, apprehended and searched the man, recovering a 9mm pistol with 13 rounds of ammunition.
The 32-year-old suspect faces charges of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition and will appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court once charged.
In a related search of a premises in Geneva Place, Hanover Park, Anti-Gang Unit members found a 9mm pistol without a serial number, together with 32 rounds of ammunition, hidden in a cupboard. A 17-year-old male was arrested for possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition. He is expected to appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court today (Tuesday, 6 October 2026).
Meanwhile, in a separate court matter linked to ongoing concerns about gang-related violence, Reagan Visagie (also known as Vlag) made another appearance in the Atlantis court for his bail application.
He faces a serious charge of assault with grievous bodily harm (GBH).
The State presented evidence of Visagie’s criminal history and propensity for violence. A week before this arrest he had been arrested for possession of a firearm and ammunition and released. Prosecutors outlined his bail profile, including previous convictions and pending cases, many involving violence and weapons.
The State further informed the court that Visagie is an American gang member and a leadership figure in the gang world.
The magistrate classified the matter as a Schedule 5 offence. Citing the alarming increase in crime in the Atlantis/Malmesbury district and across the Western Cape, the court found good reason not to deny bail. Visagie was granted bail of R1 000 subject to strict conditions: he is under house arrest until the trial is finalised, may not interfere directly or indirectly with witnesses, and is only permitted to leave his home on court days, returning as soon as possible thereafter.
Residents are advised to monitor his movements. Should he set foot outside his gate at any other time, community members are urged to contact the police immediately so that he can be arrested for violating bail conditions.
His next court date is 3 December 2026.
