West Coast: Langebaan athlete Leander Pholman, now 20 years old, remains committed to competitive athletics while balancing work and future career plans.
The former South African Elsen Schools standout will compete at the G4GA Athletics Spring Championships on 23–24 October 2026 at Goble Park in Bethlehem, Free State.
Pholman has built an impressive record in middle-distance and sprint events. His personal bests include 1:53.17 in the 800 m (Green Point Stadium, Cape Town, April 2025), 49.61 in the 400 m, and 22.47 in the 200 m. During his junior career, he secured multiple national Elsen Schools titles, set the SA Elsen Schools 400 m record, won five gold medals at the SA High & LSEN Schools Championships, and claimed the Boland Senior 400 m title.
He continues to train independently while managing a full work schedule. Pholman is currently completing a six-month learnership at Brights Hardware Store, which runs until January 2027. Thereafter, according to his mother, Mrs Lee-Andi Naydine Mustapha, he intends to enrol at West Coast College for formal welding training.
His participation in the Bethlehem championships has been arranged without club sponsorship for this specific event. Entry formalities, including payment of the R100 fee and registration with his ASA number, have been completed. Travel arrangements for 22 – 25 October include return flights between Cape Town and Bloemfontein, a shuttle to Bethlehem, and three nights’ accommodation, at an estimated total cost of approximately R4 650.
The G4GA Spring Championships are open to athletes from age 6 through to seniors and have attracted entries from neighbouring countries including Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Zambia. The meeting offers a full programme of track and field events in a competitive environment that aligns with Pholman’s ongoing development.
