The motorsport world was left in mourning yesterday, as news broke of the tragic passing of seasoned driver Pieter Joubert, who lost his life during the Simola Hillclimb in Knysna.

The Knysna Speed Festival confirmed the devastating incident, which occurred during Pieter’s first run on day two of the prestigious King of the Hill competition. Witnesses and footage suggest a mechanical failure led to the accident, as Joubert’s iconic Lotus lost control on the fast uphill straight and veered off the course.
Despite the swift response of medical, fire, and emergency personnel on-site, the seasoned competitor was pronounced dead at the scene. The racing community and fans are united in grief, and official investigations are underway as required by protocol.
Pieter’s family, including his brothers Dawie and Charl Joubert, both participants in the event, have shown incredible strength. Requesting that the event continue in honor of their brother’s memory.
“We are exceptionally saddened by this incident, and our thoughts and condolences are with Pieter’s family, team and friends,” said Ian Shrosbree, Managing Director of the Knysna Speed Festival. “Pieter was not only a competitor, but a beloved figure in the paddock. His passion and spirit will be remembered.”
