Johannesburg:- A South African attorney has once again summoned Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema to appear before the Equality Court in Johannesburg after lodging a formal complaint.
The lawyer filed the case at the Equality Court, alleging that Malema’s conduct or statements violated provisions of the Promotion of Equality and Prevention of Unfair Discrimination Act. This marks the latest legal challenge for the controversial politician, who has faced multiple hate speech and related cases over the years.
Details of the specific allegations in the new complaint have not yet been fully disclosed in public reports, but the action comes amid ongoing scrutiny of Malema’s public rhetoric and political activities.
Malema, a vocal critic of the current government and a champion of radical economic policies, has previously been involved in high-profile Equality Court matters, including disputes over alleged hate speech, incitement, and inflammatory statements at rallies.
The Equality Court, which deals with cases involving unfair discrimination, hate speech, and harassment, will now consider the latest complaint. No date for the initial hearing has been confirmed yet. This development adds to Malema’s busy legal calendar. In recent months, he has also been dealing with other court matters, including a sentencing related to firearm charges from a 2018 EFF event, where he received a five-year prison term but was granted leave to appeal.
The EFF has not yet issued an official comment on the new Equality Court summons, but the party has in the past dismissed similar legal actions as politically motivated attempts to silence radical voices.
Legal experts note that Equality Court cases often centre on the balance between freedom of expression and the protection of individuals or groups from harmful speech. Further updates are expected once the matter is formally enrolled and arguments begin.
