Police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi said officers were on crime-combating patrols in the area to help create a safer environment when they noticed the suspect acting suspiciously.
“The members were patrolling Marcus Garvey when they spotted a man who appeared visibly nervous as he saw the patrol vehicle. They approached and searched him, recovering a 9mm pistol, ammunition, and three magazines, two of which were extended,” said Swartbooi.
The suspect will appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court once formally charged.
Local residents expressed relief at the arrest. “We are tired of hearing gunshots almost every night. I’m glad the police are finally taking action,” said community member Zanele Majola, a mother of three.
Another resident, Thabiso Mlambo, added: “The streets have become unsafe for our children. It’s encouraging to see the police doing visible patrols. We need more of this.”
Community leaders say they hope this marks the start of consistent law enforcement presence in the area.
