Wesbank Reels After Triple Killing
Reporter – George April
CAPE TOWN: – The people of Wesbank are in mourning, after a weekend marked by brutal violence.
Three men lost their lives in separate incidents on Sunday evening, sparking fear, anger, and fresh calls for action from the community. Local residents say gunfire echoed through parts of Wesbank and the surrounding area late Sunday, with three men reportedly killed. One in a stabbing, and two in suspected gang shootings.
While police have not confirmed all the details, residents and community forums are speaking out. “Our children can’t even play in the street anymore,” said one elderly resident from the Better Life informal settlement. “We live in fear, and the gang war is not slowing down.”
The Wesbank Community Police Forum confirmed that more officers have been deployed to the area, but some believe it’s not enough. “Three lives gone in one night, it’s clear the situation is out of control,” said a CPF volunteer. “We are begging the community: speak up. Help us bring the killers to justice.”
A local youth leader, Pastor Mavuso, says young people are being pulled into gangsterism because they feel abandoned. “This is not a police problem alone, it’s a community issue. Our youth need purpose, not pistols,” he said during a community meeting on Monday.
Councillor Ntombi Jacobs, speaking at the same gathering, promised to take urgent steps to improve safety.
“We will not be silent – The violence must end.”
We call on SAPS, the Province, and even national leadership to help us restore peace in Wesbank.”
But we need the communities – Speak out….
