MITCHELL’S PLAIN:- The intensified police presence and targeted anti-gang operations in Mitchell’s Plain are beginning to show results, with officers seizing four illegal firearms and a stash of ammunition during a dramatic arrest on Monday afternoon, 7 July 2025.
Officers from the Mitchell’s Plain Crime Prevention Unit were patrolling Du Toitskloof Street in Tafelsig around 16:30 when they spotted a suspicious man sprinting into a known drug den. Believing he was carrying drugs, police pursued him into the premises and conducted a search.
What they found was far more dangerous.
During the search, police uncovered three Glock 9mm pistols and a CZ pistol—some missing serial numbers, a sign of potentially trafficked or stolen weapons. The firearms, along with an assortment of ammunition, were hidden in a transparent bag stashed in the roof of the house.
A 28-year-old suspect was immediately arrested and now faces multiple charges, including possession of prohibited firearms and illegal ammunition. He is expected to appear in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court soon.
Community Shocked: Where Are These Guns Coming From?
This bust raises urgent questions:
- Where did these high-caliber weapons originate?
- Are organized syndicates arming gangs in the Cape Flats?
- Is there a deeper connection between local drug houses and illegal arms trafficking?
While the arrest is a clear win for local law enforcement, residents and activists are calling for deeper investigations into gun smuggling routes and the protection of vulnerable communities, especially youth, from being pulled into gang-related violence.
“We commend the swift action of the Mitchell’s Plain police. Every illegal firearm taken off the streets is a life potentially saved,” said a local community leader. “But we need to get to the root – who is supplying these weapons, and how are they entering our communities?”
Police have confirmed that increased visibility and bolstered deployments will continue in known gang hotspots.
CCN will follow this developing story closely.
