CAPE TOWN: – In a rapid breakthrough, Western Cape police have arrested five suspects in connection with the shooting that left three men and a woman dead in the Marikana informal settlement, Philippi East, on Saturday evening.
Provincial Serious Violent Crime detectives, supported by the Combat Team, worked through the night and effected the arrests early on Monday morning as part of a tracing operation launched immediately after the attack on Disa Road.
Two firearms were recovered from the suspects, aged between 25 and 35. The guns will undergo ballistic testing to determine if they were used in the murders and attempted murder.
The suspects have been charged with murder, attempted murder and illegal possession of firearms. They are expected to appear in court in due course.
Police say the motive for the incident is believed to be linked to extortion.
With the investigation continuing, the Marikana community is urged to come forward with information on any other crimes believed to be linked to the arrested suspects that were never reported to police.
