In South Africa Uncovers Deadly Cache

Cape Town, South Africa (CNN) – In a high-stakes intelligence-driven operation, South African authorities have seized a massive cache of illegal firearms, explosives, and drugs in the Western Cape, marking a significant victory in the fight against organized crime.

A multi-disciplinary team, including Anti-Gang Unit investigators, Crime Intelligence (Counter Gangs and Narcotics), and Visible Policing Anti-Gang Unit members, executed coordinated raids on storage facilities in Bellville South and Stikland on the evening of March 3, 2025.

The operation, following weeks of surveillance, led to the arrest of two suspects—a 41-year-old woman and a 47-year-old man—who now face serious charges, including illegal possession of firearms, ammunition, explosives, and narcotics.

Massive Weapons and Drug Seizure

At the first raid in Bellville South, law enforcement officials discovered a staggering arsenal of weapons, including:

Three AK-47 rifles

One R5 rifle

One assault rifle

Twelve 9mm pistols

Three Uzi sub machine guns

Four shotguns

Two revolvers

Six M26 grenades

50,000 Mandrax tablets (a highly addictive sedative commonly trafficked in South Africa)

A large quantity of assorted ammunition

Later in the evening, the operation expanded to a second storage facility in Stikland, where officers seized two kilograms of heroin, further solidifying the investigation’s link to a broader criminal syndicate.

Ongoing Investigation & Potential Arrests

Authorities have not ruled out further arrests as investigations continue. The sophisticated nature of the operation suggests a well-organized criminal network, potentially with links to international arms and drug trafficking rings.

The Western Cape has long battled gang violence, fuelled by the illegal arms and narcotics trade. This latest breakthrough underscores law enforcement’s commitment to cracking down on illicit activities and removing dangerous weapons from the streets. South African Police Service (SAPS) officials have urged the public to come forward with any information that could assist in dismantling further criminal operations.

Impact on South African Crime Landscape

This operation represents one of the most significant arms and drug seizures in recent years, highlighting the scale of the illicit trade in the region. Experts warn that the confiscated weapons and explosives could have fuelled violent crime, including gang warfare and cash-in-transit heists.

As the case unfolds, all eyes will be on the judicial proceedings against the two arrested suspects and whether this bust will lead to further dismantling of criminal networks operating in the Western Cape and beyond.

Stay tuned for updates as the story develops.
