Sewer Services Disruption
Reporter – George April
Cape Town:- The City of Cape Town has issued a critical alert, regarding a disruption in sewer operations in the Airport Industrial Area.
It’s due to emergency repairs on a collapsed sewer pipe at the inlet of the Borcherds Quarry Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTW).
According to the City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate, the urgent repair work will begin at 19:00 on Wednesday, 16 April 2025, and continue overnight until 05:00 on Thursday, 17 April 2025. All sewer pump stations discharging into the Borcherds Quarry WWTW will be temporarily switched off during this time to ensure the safety of repair crews and minimize further infrastructure damage.
As a safety measure, the sumps of all affected pump stations will be drawn down in advance to reduce the risk of overflows. However, the City has warned of potential environmental and health hazards due to possible sewer overflows and has advised residents to avoid affected areas. Children and pets should be kept away until the areas have been properly disinfected by City teams.
“We thank residents for their understanding and cooperation as we work urgently to address this matter,” the City said in a statement.
