Athlone:- Members of the South African Police Service’s Lockdown III team carried out a coordinated, intelligence-driven operation in Athlone on Thursday.
The operation resulting in the arrest of four suspects and the seizure of drugs and an unlicensed firearm.
According to SAPS, officers simultaneously searched identified premises in Anthony Street, Silvertown, following information linked to illegal drug activity and firearm possession in the area. The operation led to the arrest of three adult males and one adult female.
During the searches, police confiscated a significant quantity of illegal substances, including mandrax tablets, crystal meth (tik), cocaine and ecstasy tablets. An unlicensed firearm was also recovered on the premises.
All four suspects are expected to face charges relating to the possession of drugs and the possession of an unlicensed firearm. They are due to appear in the Athlone Magistrates’ Court once they have been formally charged.
Police say the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to remove illegal firearms and drugs from communities.
These illegal staff are often directly linked to violent crime, organised criminal activity and the exploitation of vulnerable residents.
“The removal of drugs and illegal firearms from the streets remains a key priority in restoring safety and stability in our communities,” SAPS said in a statement.
Community leaders have repeatedly raised concerns about the impact of drug trafficking and illegal firearms on neighbourhood safety, particularly on young people and families living in high-risk areas.
Police have urged residents to continue working with law enforcement by reporting criminal activity anonymously.
SAPS reiterated that intelligence-led operations, supported by community information, play a crucial role in disrupting criminal networks and preventing further harm.
Investigations into the case continue.
